Why Spring is the Best Time for Aeration

The best way to get your lawn ready for spring and warmer weather is aeration. And the best time to do it is RIGHT NOW. Here in Middle Georgia where temperatures get crazy high, aeration is absolutely essential for a happy, healthy lawn. Here at Sanderscapes, we recommend you aerate your lawn at least once per year.

Aeration is necessary for the growth and health of your lawn. Aeration strategically removes small plugs of grass from your turf. This leaves behind "holes" in the turf that allow oxygen, water, and nutrients to reach further into the soil. By improving the base soil, the roots of the grass expand and deepen drastically improving the overall health of the lawn.

Here's why right now in the spring is the best time to aerate:

  1. This is when your lawn begins growing. You want to have the aeration completed while the root system is at its peak growth.
  2. It allows nutrients to get into your soil BEFORE super-hot temperatures hit. Once those hot temperatures hit, it’s hard for the nutrients to get deep enough to make a difference.
  3. It allows the grass time to “heal” and fill in the holes. While these holes are essential in getting the nutrients to the soil, it's best that they have "filled in" before the toughest heat of the year.
